MILWAUKEE
, WI, January
11, 2008 - Brett Favre flew out of
Green Bay
for the final time more than four months ago, and he now wears a
New York Jets jersey on Sunday afternoons. But the shadow of the
three-time league MVP still looms large over much of the
Midwest
, and his legacy is being used to raise money for a worthy cause.
“Letters
To Brett Favre: A Fan Tribute” — a new book by award-winning
Wisconsin author Thomas Hapka, is being released with a portion of
the profits going to benefit the Special Olympics. The book was
formally unveiled before an audience of more than 400 people at
the Southridge Mall in
Milwaukee
. The event was covered by
Milwaukee
television stations FOX 6, ABC affiliate WISN Channel 12, and USA
Today.
Comprised
of letters collected by a popular Brett Favre fan organization —
founded and operated by brothers Erick and Adam Rolfson — as
well as essays from the author, prominent bloggers, and
sportswriters, the book is a compelling account of the many ways
the future Hall-of-Famer has touched the lives of people from all
walks of life.
Take
for example to story of a man known simply as Stanley
K. of Manitowoc, who writes about his 65-year-old wife, Sally, who
is a proud grandmother of four plus her adopted grandson, Favre.
“Yes,
my wife truly seems to think Brett is one of our grandchildren.
She speaks of him as if he’s part of the family, and when people
in church or the grocery store ask about “the grandkids” she
always makes a point of recounting Brett’s latest football
heroics or charitable deeds. Strangers and casual acquaintances
think she’s nuts, but our closest friends and fellow Favre fans
seem to get it....
At home, our mantle is adorned with photos of our four biological
grandchildren, but sandwiched between them is a large, neatly
framed, autographed photo of, you guessed it, Brett Favre. And
let’s not forget the holidays!
For
the past several years, our Thanksgiving dinner has been served on
Packer plates with a big “4” and an action photo of Brett
stamped in the middle of them. I’m sure those will be replaced
with a New York Jets/Brett Favre china set, assuming they even
make such a thing. And Christmas… good grief!
My dear Sally has an entire collection of miniature Brett
Favre’s that she carefully hangs on the tree, and she’s even
got a “Merry Christmas Brett!” stocking that she proudly hangs
above the fireplace alongside the ones bearing the names of our
“real” grandchildren....”
More than
two-hundred fans contributed stories, recounting their favorite
memories of Brett Favre — on and off the field. Some of these
accounts are stirring and sad, while others are humorous
recollections of Lambeau Field memories and more recent adventures
in the Meadowlands.
Special
Olympics chapters in
New York, Wisconsin
, and Favre’s home state of
Mississippi
will equally split a percentage of the profits from the sale of
the book, and book signings are being organized to help each of
the respective chapters with their immediate project goals.
